The Toronto Maple Leafs gave a physical exam to forward Nathan Horton to see if he is hockey ready. Unfortunately Horton failed to pass his physical and will not be listed on the club's training camp roster.
Horton, currently is suffering from a degenerative back condition that may prevent him from ever playing hockey again. Horton was a solid NHL player that had high potentials. He won the Stanley Cup in 2011 with the Boston Bruins. He signed with the Blue Jackets in 2013 but only played 35 games that season. He hasn’t played a game since and chances are he won’t ever again. The Leafs acquired Horton in a shocking trade last season, which sent over-paid forward David Clarkson to the Jackets in exchanged for Nathan Horton. Maple Leaf fans know that Horton still has a chance to return to the NHL. He is being treated and fingers are crossed he could suit up for the Blue and White.
Even if he doesn’t play a game for the Maple Leafs, they must still pay Horton his $37.1 million that is still remaining on his contract. However those dollars are off the cap books and the Leafs won’t be penalized for having him. Horton will clear a major portion of the team's salary cap as long as he remains on long-term injured reserve.
