As a kid growing up in the city of Peterborough, it was hard to not know the band Hawk Nelson. They were popular around town and the band was originally formed in Peterborough. Now former lead singer Jason Dunn started the band with a group of friends in the early 2000,s. Hawk Nelson started in 2002 and performed with Jason in the band for over 10 years. On February 1, 2012, he decided that he would be leaving the band, in order to pursue his solo project, Lights Go Down.
“Every thing has a lifespan. Bands included. I believe we had reached our potential and I am super proud of what we accomplished. I don’t regret leaving. My focus is completely on my new band, Lights Go Down.” Jason Dunn on if he regrets leaving Hawk Nelson.
Hawk Nelson is still together and released a new album in
2015 called “Diamonds”.
When Jason was involved with Hawk Nelson, they released a album on September 9, 2009 title “Live Life Loud”. On this album the band released a track that I always found interesting. It was track #6 called "Ode to Lord Stanley" (Interlude). The song was based on a dream that Jason had about the Calgary Flames winning the Stanley Cup. The track is only 1 minute and 55 seconds but it's entertaining during the whole song.
I was very fortunate to be able to sit down and talk to Jason about the song and just how important hockey is to him. I wanted to know why he wrote the song and what gave him the idea to create it. Jason told me that “I wrote that song while I was vacationing in Hawaii. I picked up a ukulele from a street vendor, learned a few chords and wrote the song while traveling to our hotel. Hockey has always been my passion and the Flames have always been my team. It just seemed appropriate that I write a song for them. Thus, Ode To Lord Stanley was born.
He mentioned that the song wasn’t made for album and that they just put on it for fun. “We threw it on there for fun. We realized back then that people just like to have a good time. That song makes you smile and feel good…especially if you’re a Flames fan.”
Dunn has been a fan since the legendary days and when asked why he’s a fan, he replied saying “I have cheered for the Flames ever since they won the cup in 89. I’ve always been a “go against the grain” type of guy. Growing up in Leaf country, I’ve kind of stick out like a sore thumb. Theo Fleury will forever be my favorite player.”
Jason wrote the song because he loves hockey and has since a child. He has an amazing voice and because of that, the Nashville Predators offered him to sing Oh Canada twice while the Calgary Flames were in town.“I was fortunate enough to sing proudly our national anthem for 2 Flames games, both in Nashville. It was an incredible experience. I hope to do it again.” He said he was asked a number of times to perform the American anthem but turned down the offers because he was “too scared to screw it up."
Living the rock star life gave Jason the chance to meet some NHL players and build personal relationships with them “I’ve got to meet a bunch of players throughout my life. It’s cool to see that side of hockey. A few guys I’ve stayed in touch with over the years. We live vicariously through each other.”
During the interview I asked Jason how the Petes impacted his life and hockey in general while growing in Peterborough,”Growing up in Peterborough has really made me the person I am today. It’s a great town with a great hockey community. We all grew up playing the game and loving the game. I hope someday that same passion will be passed down to my kids. I grew up loving the Pete’s. My favorite Pete growing up was probably Troy "Scooter" Stephens or Jason Dawe.”
I'd like to thank Jason Dunn for sitting down and taking time out of his day to do a interview with alwayshockey.com
