It was only 10 years ago the Petes opened the 2005-2006 season kicking off their 50th anniversary for being in the league. That year the team announced a 50th jersey and numerous special events throughout the season to bring in the historical year. Petes fans were excited about the team and they were winning games. That season the Petes had a great year and finished with winning the OHL championship. The Petes 05/06 team had over half their players drafted to the NHL but only eight players actually playing in an NHL game. It's been ten years since the championship season and only three of those eight still play in the NHL. These individuals are Jordan Staal (Carolina), Steve Downie (Arizona) and Patrick Kaleta (Buffalo).

The top five leading scorers in 2005-2006 for the Petes were Daniel Ryder (82 points), Jamie Tardif (69 points), Jordan Morrison (68 points), Jordan Staal (68 points) and Liam Reddox (64 points). Forward Jamie Tardif led the Petes in goals, scoring 40 in 62 games. The Petes goaltender was share by David Shantz (49 games) and Trevor Cann (20 games). Both goalies had good seasons in the statistics area. Backup Trevor Cann posted 16 wins, 2 loses and 2 ties. His save parentage was .919. The Petes starting goalie David Shantz recorded 31 wins, 14 loses and 3 ties. He posted a .915 save percentage.

The anniversary team was coached by Petes legend Dick Todd, He returned to the team a season prior and in 2006 added his third championship to his Petes resume. Former Petes player and now head coach Judy Hully was assistant for Told during his tender. Darren Keily was the other assistant coach for Peterborough during this time. The Petes finished at the top of the standings, with a record of 47 wins and 16 loses. Jeff Twohey was the Petes General Manager during this time. His most memorable OHL moments is from this season. "The 2006 championship team was special. The core was drafted, developed and grew up together as Petes. Winning the Championship on home ice, and beating London in 4 straight in a completely sold out memorial centre." Twohey mentioned when asked about what that season meant to him.

The playoffs for the Petes were successful through every round. They beat the Ottawa 67's in 6 games in the Conference Quarterfinals and the Sudbury Wolvers in 4 games in the Conference Semi Finals. The Petes played the Barrie Bolts in the Conference Finals and won the series in 5 games. In the finals the Petes played the first seed London Knights and swept the series 4-0 to capture the J. Ross Robertson Cup. Petes forward Daniel Ryder was awarded the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award for being the 2006 OHL Playoff MVP.

Since the 2005-2006 season, the Peterborough Petes haven't had much success in winning or the playoffs. Fans have grown tired and to see a championship once again. It's been 10 years since the historical season and all fans wants to see history repeat its self again
